Vocal Work: A$AP Rocky

Production: Mura Masa (a.k.a Alexander Crossan)

Release Date: September 30, 2016

Well, well. Look who’s back.

After an arguably quiet spell away from the industry, A$AP Rocky gives his two cents on a twisted, lusty take on Mura Masa’s “Lovesick Fuck”. I can’t even begin to explain how satisfied I am with this flip. Mura Masa has always been a household name for me, ever since “Lotus Eater” debuted on Soundtrack of a Death. Rocky remains a reliable source of innovation on the hip-hop and R&B scenes since “Live. Love. ASAP” back in 2011.

Reminiscing on hormonally charged encounters while “sipping on Pro’”, Rocky laces the British electronic producer’s banger with slick verses under the claps and snares characteristic of the original track.

But, wait — are those airhorns I hear? Why, yes, indeed they are.

I’m impressed. Apparently it was A$AP’s idea to add the dancehall-esque airhorns in the collaboration that took place at the iconic Abbey Road studios in the UK. Unfortunately, according to some dissidents on the Twittersphere, the twist in production was not thoroughly well-received. Crossan responds to the criticism with indignation and defends Rocky’s usage of the “iconic connotations of the airhorn”. Major props to the duo for their work on this track.

“Love$ick” could very well be a strong contender for the charts this year.
